One-on-one

Guitar Lessons

Whether you’re picking up a guitar for the very first time or you’ve been playing for a while and want to sharpen your skills, you’re in the right place.

I’ve spent years playing and performing both electric and acoustic guitar, and it continues to be a passion of mine. There’s just something about the feeling of strumming a favorite song, getting lost in the sound you’re creating, and performing on stage. I love helping students tap into that same joy.

No matter where you start, learning guitar is a gift you can carry with you for life. My goal is to help you build skills and confidence so you can enjoy playing for years to come—whether it’s around a campfire, in a band, or just for your own enjoyment.

Why guitar?

And When Ukulele Might Be a Better Start

For many new beginners—especially younger children around 6 or 7—the guitar can be physically challenging at first. Pressing down on steel strings, reaching around the body of the instrument, or navigating larger fretboards can make learning feel frustrating instead of fun.

That’s why I recommend starting with the ukulele for younger students and even adults. It’s easier on small hands, has gentler strings, and builds the same core skills that transfer to guitar later on.

Students who begin with ukulele often develop greater passion and are more excited to play because they gain skill and confidence faster than starting with guitar.

Your Instructor

Hey, I’m Barrett. I’ve been playing guitar for over 30 years, and I still get excited every time I pick one up. Whether it’s acoustic or electric, I love helping students connect with the instrument in a way that feels fun, personal, and empowering.

I perform live every month, and I’ve played everything from stripped-down pop covers to blues-heavy electric sets. My playing style is technically strong, and I always bring a relaxed, supportive approach to teaching. Whether you're just learning your first chords or looking to level up your soloing and rhythm work, I can help you grow your skills with clear coaching and plenty of encouragement.

Let’s find your sound—and have a good time doing it.

Student Testimonials

I’m having the best time learning guitar. What started out as a way to connect with my daughter, has turned into my own personal passion. I’m really enjoying the journey. It takes lots of focus… which takes me away from the stress of life. It is so exciting to be able to actually play songs… songs that I enjoy.

If you have any interest in learning guitar, ukulele, drums, piano…. I highly recommend Moxie Music Lessons. Barrett had me playing Lean On Me by lesson 4…. Now Taylor Swift and the Eagles! I love it!!!

My daughter and I are preparing for our first mini performance …. Eek! Can’t wait!

Guitar Essentials

I highly recommend watching deciding between ukulele and guitar to anyone new to the guitar. For a better understanding of what to expect watch before starting guitar lessons.

  • 3-Ring Binder (Amazon)
  • Music Stand (Amazon)
  • Music Stand Light (Amazon)
  • A Guitar
For young beginner students, I recommend an electric or a nylon string acoustic guitar. Steel-string acoustic guitars are hard for small and young hands. However, if that’s what you have, don’t buy something else! We can work with it but be aware it can be a bit more uncomfortable and will require more practice to build finger strength. I can provide recommendations within your budget during our first lesson.

    • Fender FA-15N 3/4 (Amazon)

D’Addario makes two excellent options. The GHP Acoustic Guitar Humidifier (Amazon ) and the Humidipak system (Amazon).
  • Bag or Case
Please transport your instrument in a bag or a case. Not only does it protect your instrument, but it also protects items from inevitable contact.
  • Capo
The D’Addario Pro Plus (Amazon) or NS Tri Action capo (Amazon). These are great because they have an adjustable tension spring. Other capos will over-tension the strings and make the guitar sound out of tune.
  • Guitar Picks
Any standard medium-weight pick will do. (Amazon)
  • Tuner
Make sure you turn the power off on the tuner when done. The batteries drain fast! (Amazon)
